Abstract

This article brings an implicit problem: How to unite different peoples and cultures, that are in constant tranformation, around a commom project? The democratic regime is the most approprieate for this task, as it respects diferences and combines it with freedom and justice to promote equal opportunities. On the other hand, the union carried out democratically improves democracy, both favoring each other.

Abstract

"Having Too Much is the first academic volume devoted to limitarianism: the idea that the use of economic or ecosystem resources should not exceed certain limits. This concept has deep roots in economic and political thought. One can find similar statements of such limits in thinkers such as Plato, Aquinas, and Spinoza. But Having Too Much is the first time in contemporary political philosophy that limitarianism is explored at length and in detail. Bringing together in one place the best writing from key theorists of limitarianism, this book is an essential contribution to political philosophy in general, and theories of distributive justice in particular. Including some of the key published articles as well as new chapters, Having Too Much is necessary reading for scholars and students of political theory and philosophy, as well as anyone interested in questions of distributive justice" Publisher.

Abstract

Borders, democratic legitimacy, multiscale statehood, governance : the covid crisis has shaken things up and emphasized both the contradictions and the central salience of territories. In this sharp volume Oscar Mazzoleni critically reviews the main debates about territories that have unfold over the last two decades, in particular in geography and political sociology. He makes a powerful insight for a critical territorial approach aiming to analyze democratic politics. Patrick Le Gals, CNRS research professor at Sciences Po, Paris, France Mazzoleni has contributed a brief but encompassing study of the concept of territory in social sciences. This well-written piece analyzes the concept of territory as multidimensional and interdisciplinary. His is a rigorous attempt to offer a systematic framework to make territorial politics part of the contemporary research agenda. In developing a territorial approach, he adds to the field by addressing essential gaps in the literature. Margarita Gomez-Reino Cachafeiro, full professor at the UNED University, Madrid, Spain The book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to the uses of the concept of territory in the study of democratic politics. The author tests the limits of a literature which avoid territorial dimensions, and reasserts the relevance of the concepts of territory and territorial space in the understanding of contemporary politics. With a political sociological perspective, but engaging in an interdisciplinary dialogue, the book draws a new conceptual framework focusing on both traditional and innovative topics: state-building and the transformation of nation-states, the changes in democratic citizenship, the relevance of territory for voting behaviour, the territorial dimensions of populism and the experience of the pandemic, taken as a global territorial crisis.

Abstract

"The first volume to theorize and historicize contemporary artistic practices and culture from Chile in the English language, Dismantling the Nation-State takes as its point of departure a radical criticism against the nation-state of Chile and its colonial, capitalist, heteronormative, and extractivist rule, proposing otherwise forms of inhabiting, creating, and relating in a more fluid, contingent, ecocritical, feminist, caring, and decolonial world. The book contributes to a broad scholarly discussion around decolonial methodologies, including the acknowledgment of broad geographical epistemic locations. The authors attend to practices from distinct and distant locations in Chile-they decentralize their approach by discussing art and visual culture from the Atacama Desert to Araucani´a, from Tierra del Fuego to the Andean Region to Valparai´so, as well as beyond its modern borders. Analyzing how these practices refer to issues such as the environmental and cultural impact of extractivism, this volume also provides valuable insight for the fields of social science, Indigenous studies, and linguistics for Chile and other regions of the world, envisioning art history and visual culture from a transnational and transdisciplinary perspective"--

Abstract

This book is about the surveying and mapping cartography of the Tsarist Empire in the nineteenth century and thus contributes to comparative empire history. The topographical and cartographic development of the largest country on earth is understood as an aspect of Russia's territorialisation and examined in terms of the significance of cultural transfers from Western Europe. The topographical map as a time-bound representation of geographical space is understood as a special form of imperial self-description. The study examines which institutions and with which motives were involved in the surveying and cartographic development of the Tsarist empire, which regions came into the surveyors' focus, which "language" the cartographers used in the representation of the surveyed space and which role was played by foreign models. The analysis concludes that the tsarist government ultimately did not succeed in creating a comprehensive topographic map of the entire empire based on survey data because their main interest lay in securing Russia's peripheries--From publisher's website.

Abstract

Abstract

"Citizens of Photography explores how photography offers access to forms of citizenship beyond those available through ordinary politics. Through contemporary ethnographic investigations of photographic practice in Nicaragua, Nigeria, Greece, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Cambodia, the PhotoDemos Collective traces the resonances between political representation and photographic representation. The authors emphasize photography as lived practice and how photography's performative, transformative, and transgressive possibilities facilitate the articulation of new identities. They analyze photography ranging from family albums to social media to state and public archives, showing how it points to unknown futures and destinations in the context of social movements, the aftermath of atrocity and civil war, and the legacies of past injustices. By foregrounding photography's future-oriented, open-ended, and contingent nature and its ability to subvert and reconfigure conventional political identifications, this volume demonstrates that as much as photography looks to the past, it points to the future, acting in advance of social reality"-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract

"Global Political Leadership explores contemporary shifts in leadership, and the related leadership crisis, in the global world. Globalization is now perceived as a threatening and hostile force, with many of its advocates and political supporters turning away from it, but its processes cannot be reversed. New powers emerge, old ones re-emerge, and uncertainty about the future global order is increasing. This book tells the inside stories of global power games and asks important questions about the leadership crisis in the Western world. The author provides an interpretative framework for contemporary shifts within the Western political sphere based on the concept of global leadership. This framework presents the nature of the transformations caused by global processes, as part of which force and coercion have ceased to be the main modus operandi of the international realm. The issue of global political leadership is virtually absent from IR literature, while being widely exploited by managerial and organizational studies. However, all social organizations have 'gone global' within the last 30 years; they are more interconnected and more dependent on global processes, so the question of effective leadership strategies matching these new realities is highly necessary, even-or especially-at a time when globalization is no longer seen as a leading political program. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of global affairs, politics and international relations, leadership and development, and diplomatic studies"

Cyberspace and instability

Abstract

A wide range of actors have publicly identified cyber stability as a key policy goal but the meaning of stability in the context of cyber policy remains vague and contested: vague because most policymakers and experts do not define cyber stability when they use the concept; contested because they propose measures that rely - often implicitly - on divergent understandings of cyber stability. This is a thorough investigation of instability within cyberspace and of cyberspace itself. Its purpose is to reconceptualise stability and instability for cyberspace, highlight their various dimensions and thereby identify relevant policy measures. It critically examines both 'classic' notions associated with stability - for example, whether cyber operations can lead to unwanted escalation - as well as topics that have so far not been addressed in the existing cyber literature, such as the application of a decolonial lens to investigate Euro-American conceptualisations of stability in cyberspace.
